Posted: February 4, 2017

HARRISBURG – Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman released the following statement after receiving the endorsement of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania.

“I am deeply humbled and proud to be one of the endorsed Republican candidates and to have earned a ‘Highly Recommended’ rating from the Pennsylvania Bar Association for Pennsylvania Superior Court,” Stedman said. “As the longtime District Attorney of one of Pennsylvania’s largest counties and with over 70% of the cases that come before the Superior Court being criminal in nature, I am keenly aware of how important it is that we have judges with a strong background in criminal law serving on the Superior Court. My experience and qualifications have uniquely prepared me to serve on this court.”

As Lancaster District Attorney since 2007, Craig Stedman has been driven to protect the most vulnerable and created the first ever countywide Elder Abuse Unit as well as greatly enhanced the Child Abuse Unit, which has received statewide recognition. He collaborated with the courts and reduced the prison population with targeted strategies and increased efficiency.  He created the office’s first Outreach Coordinator to focus on outreach, prevention and education and built one of the top Computer Forensic Units in the state. DA Stedman is strong supporter of Veterans Court and routinely works with the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association on legislation and improvements.

Prior to his election, Craig Stedman served as Assistant District Attorney in Lancaster for seventeen years as a trial and appellate lawyer. Stedman eventually specialized in homicide prosecutions and successfully handled the most complicated and serious cases. He took over as the Chief of the Lancaster County Major Crimes Unit 2000 and worked hand in hand with police on the front lines to solve murders.  All of his trial convictions have withstood appellate scrutiny and none have been overturned.

Craig Stedman received his law degree from the Penn State University Dickinson School of Law, Magna Cum Laude, and received a Bachelor of Arts in History from University of Delaware, Magna Cum Laude with Distinction.

He attended the University of Delaware on a ROTC scholarship and served as a military intelligence officer in the United States Army Reserves upon graduating from the United States Army Intelligence Center and School in Fort Huachuca, Arizona.  He remains a member of the Military Officer’s Association of America.

The Pennsylvania Bar Association awarded District Attorney Craig Stedman a “Highly Recommend” rating. They wrote, “While the candidate’s career has been primarily focused on criminal law, the commission is confident of his intellectual capabilities and the ability to transfer legal principles and reasoning to other areas of law required to serve on the Superior Court. The candidate has a strong history of community service in the Lancaster area, which has been primarily focused on crime and safety. Because of his intelligence, commitment to fairness and high ethical standards, the commission highly recommends the candidate for the Superior Court.”
